U.S.: Flu pandemic could be worse than terrorist attack
It's based on a worst-case scenario in which flu kills 2 million people, infects 50 million and puts 40 percent of workers out of commission. White House officials say there is no need for alarm, given that a pandemic doesn't exist and so far, there's no evidence of easy human-to-human transmission of avian flu and its deadly H5N1 strain.
The White House says "not to panic". Haven't they been telling the base and the rest of us, for quite some time to panic!panic!panic! about bird flu? Is this the post-Rove White House speaking? Hmmmmmm.
full story here. Short answer, nothing bad yet.
Just when you thought poor old Pravda was looking kind of grim:
Everyone wants to know how to read the sexual body language
They bust out with:
Pot calls kettle black!
From early childhood, US citizens are raised on a steady diet of pro-US government propaganda that is fed to them at school and at home through the media of television, radio, newspapers, magazines, books, and popular music. The propaganda presents the US government as an ethically superior exemplar of justice for the entire world, as an exceptionally generous contributor to global economic development, and as a benevolent arbiter of world affairs. Furthermore, a great deal of crucial information about US political history, particularly regarding events of the past half-century, is not taught in US schools and is never allowed to appear in the Mainstream Media outlets.
This was in my inbox the other day:
Hello Alums:
The avalanche of my first year as chair is about to finish consuming me, but not before I send out best wishes to everyone...and here's an invite to this year's Bobcat Invasion of the Big Apple. Our B.F.A. showcase and Alumni reunion will be Monday, May 15.
The showcase is at the Michael Weller Theatre/Broken Watch Theatre Company. (It is the same place it was last year, but then it was known as the Sande Shurin Theatre.) The Theatre is located at 311 W. 43rd St. #602. The showcase starts at 6:00 pm. and runs about an hour. The Alumni Reception will be at the Social Bar & Grill (795 8th Avenue). The reception runs from 8-11 p.m. Food will be provided, and there is a cash bar.
** To help with the headcount for food, please RSVP if you plan on attending.
I wonder who was the chair last year? Did the other guy retire or die or something? I don’t keep up but I am pretty sure they old boy who was chair while I was there many moons ago, had been retired off much longer ago than just last year. I wonder who I missed.
Damn. I wanna go! No chance in hell of that happening but still, damn. I wonder if anyone I know would go? What would I do if I did go? Stand around over beers and talk about what? “Hey remember that time you guys didn’t really talk to me unless I talked to you first. I remember watching you guys get arrested for public intox that time at the annual banquet and one of your girlfriends had to follow you out there and bail you out. She came back and accepted your awards for you at the ceremony. I bet you didn’t get laid that night. What am I doing now? Didn’t bother trying to IMDB me? Good idea, I’m not there. You aren’t either, but I’m sure you’re working on it”, it doesn’t matter though, I’m so jealous of ya’ll it isn’t even funny..
Good times. Is it just new grads or is it also old timers? I’m would be happy to just know where 795 8th Avenue looks like or even better 311 W. 43rd St. #602. Did I walk past there when I was in NYC a couple of years ago? Have I seen it on Law and Order? I don’t remember if I saw that street in person. I think we were up in the 50s most of the time. Gawd.
I think in reality, I really would not want to be in attendance. It would blow their minds though if I did show up. It would take them a while to figure out where they know me from. I still look more or less the same, so they think they knew me from somewhere. I’m pretty sure that our people who ended up in New York ended up there to work “in the field”, they didn’t go there to be file clerks and I doubt they would want to talk the great paper clips v. binder clips debate with me anyway, even if by some chance they did end up there as file clerks - They probably file really cool things. Oh, wait, they aren't filing
Another thing is happening on the 15th, it’s my five year anniversary of coming to work here and filing uncool things. It is the five year and three day anniversary of me moving from Texas to North Carolina.

New very, very low poll numbers - 34% and then, by magic, new fear mongering.
Report: U.S. bracing for massive flu disruptions
Employers should have plans to keep workers at least 3 feet (1 meter) apart, colleges should consider which dormitories could be used to quarantine the sick, and flight crews should have surgical masks to put on coughing travelers under a draft of the government's pandemic flu plan obtained by The Associated Press.
It's kind of a chicken and the egg thing, really.

Today for many people is an election day. This means that many people need to go participate in our Democracy. This means that you really don't have anything more important to do. Today is an election day and your priority is to go vote. Polling places are open for roughly 12 hours and during that time you can take a break from your lunch time work outs, your errands, eating at that middle of the road trendy McResturant that you have a coupon for, or any of the other things you think rate as "more important" than going to your polling place and doing your duty and voting.
If you can't or won't go and vote over your lunch hour you can do it before work or after work or during work. Your boss has to let you go. None of the things you want to do are as important and the thing you need to do. You need to go vote. Trust me, tomorrow you can go and do all your self indulgent crap that you would do today, but won't because you were voting instead.
Consider it an electoral pop quiz
You say you don't know enough about the candidates we are voting for - Not good enough. There has been voting guides online and in your newspapers for weeks; maybe you don't spend much time online (liars) or you don't read the papers (losers) there are signs around with names on them, vote for the name on the sign you like the most, vote for the name on the sign that annoys you the least. Give up and just vote for the woman or go for the Hispanic surnames (I did that for years!) - if all else fails, vote for the Democrat!. My local readers and I are voting in primaries, there may be more than one Democrat - Go to the Voters Guide
Karl Rove in in charge of them now
The Republicans will be out in force. This is what they do. Low voter turn out is always in their favor. They know you don't think that this is "important enough", they take your asshat nature for granted. If you don't vote, they will and they will screw you over. Hard. There will be a grand total of about four people at your voting place when you go in, three of them will be GOP operatives. If you don't vote those Roveian creatures will and get you will end up with Gawd Only Knows Who in the general election; and if you don't like who you end up having to choose from in the mid-term elections it will be your fault because you didn't vote. America will stay in the dumper and it will be your fault. Yours and yours alone.

May 1 is also the third anniversary of "Mission Accomplished Day". Here is how the mission is going thus far.
Bush challenges hundreds of laws Quick, name 750 laws that do not apply to you.
Or as you may know it "May Day". The day when back in the old USSR they used to parade their tanks and missiles and everyone waved red flags and generally celebrated their loyalty to The State?
May Day, George W. Bush style.
Loyalty Day
Why there is a May Day, hint it wasn't because Khrushchev had a big missile.
